A propane truck falls from an overpass, killing dozens of innocent people on the freeway below. When Robert Herrick, one of Houston's most respected trial lawyers, agrees to represent the families of the victims, a bizarre chain of events is set into motion that ultimately threatens his career, his family, even his life. Pitted against the ruthless lawyer Jimmy Coleman, partner in the mega-firm Booker & Baine, Herrick finds himself careening between black-tie balls and opulent private jets to an underworld populated by drug pushers and topless dancers. With hundreds of millions of dollars and his own life and practice at stake, one lawyer struggles to find justice for his clients even while a psychopathic murderer lurks in the shadows.
The acclaimed novel of greed, lawyers, secrets and justice--now in a quality format, with active TOC.

If you're like me, you look for books that have lots of courtroom action. It's easy to find novels about lawyers, but hard to find novels where lots of the "action" takes place in the courtroom. This book did have a great deal of courtroom action, and I enjoyed most of that aspect. But I found the rest of the book predictable and not particularly engaging. The writing was ok, but certainly not great.
I probably won't be reading any more books by this author.

This is truly a page-turner. At the same time it's the most realistic lawyer thriller there is. You couldn't get a more exciting picture of how a big case happens, if you were sitting on the jury.
Author David Crump has scored a dynamic success on several challenging fronts. He has transformed the sometimes staid arena of civil litigation into authentic characters that come alive with geniune appeal and a kind of refreshing honesty that is so rare in modern fiction. Electric plot lines power a fast-paced story that blends the best of gritty dialogue with good, flowing description and twists that will keep the audience engaged through the final chapter. This is a great inside exploration of the civil justice system -- even better, it is a great read!
Rarely do you have the opportunity to go behind the scenes to understand what is really happening. Whether it is the operating room or the court room it is hard to understand the subtleties of the art of the deal in getting to resolution. Crump allows the reader to process through the negotiations, evidence gathering establishing the premise of the novel. Conflict! Law as a "practice" has ample vagueness that establishes a natural conflict among counsel. Add to that the eneviatable conflict of mainstream business and personal injury and you have the ideal battleground for an interesting, spell binding read.
I totally enjoyed how Crump weaved in the outlandish characters from legal to forensic, medical to executive.
It is a great read and if you are a tuned you may uncover the story behind the story. It would make a basis for a great movie similar to the great Michael Douglas and Tom Cruise legal spins.
As a professor of law and a veteran trial attorney, David Crump boasts the experience to understand and explain the mechanics that move the plot of his first legal procedural novel, CONFLICT OF INTEREST. As a student of human nature, Crump also brings another dimension to the task, as his characters leap to life in an action-packed, page-turning saga that adds a new title to the list of outstanding works of fiction in the legal thrillers genre. As a result, CONFLICT OF INTEREST ranks with some of the most unforgettable courtroom dramas of this era, from celluloid classics like Paul Newman in The Verdict (Two-Disc Collector's Edition)to similar books that have been transferred to film, including Jonathan Harr's A Civil Action and Michael Connelly's The Lincoln Lawyer.
Crump's book is a must-read for residents of the legal thrillers community.
CONFLICT OF INTEREST
My most highly recommended court room novel. Unusually, instead of shocking murder it's a case of corporate negligence and a billion dollars sought in damages.
Lots to learn about case runners, judge shopping, woodshedding, witness interrogation techniques; there's even a decent commentary on Narcissistic Personality Disorder.
When the plot opens up with a maniac breaking out an AK-47 on our hero, you say give me a break. And there is also seemingly gratuitous sex scenes that seem incongruous. But it all comes together logically in the end.
This book is evidence of very hard working authorship. Interesting and essential subplots, and enough sleazy villains to fill a jury box. Not to mention the dog eat dog morality lawyers bring to the battle.
Crump When you go to trial, it isn't interesting. It isn't fun. It's war. Ask any trial lawyer how he feels just before going to trial, and ten to one, the answer will be "scared."
This book was a good read. I will look for other books by this author. I prefer a book that tells a good story without all the bad language.
the author is probably a better lawyer than author. The story line was good for the most part but there was a bit at the end I found a tad unbelievable. The author is a lawyer and I'm not but I think the legal stuff was correct and that's why I like courtroom dramas -for the legal stuff. The blurb at the end by the author about the legal side of things was better written than the story itself. I read it all so it must have been OK
